by Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling
A delegation of talented U.S. age-group women will compete in the respected Klippan Lady Open in Klippan, Sweden, Feb. 16-18. Seven will compete in U17 division, with six wrestling in Senior division. Four 2023 U17 World team members are on the tour.
The Klippan Lady Open has two age divisions, a Senior competition and a U17 competition. The United States will enter athletes in both divisions. Traditionally, the USA has entered top U20 athletes in the Klippan Open Senior division, and will have six U20 talents competing there this year.
The Senior division will be contested February 17-18. Three members of the 2023 U.S. U17 World Team will wrestle against the Senior athletes from other nations: Rianne Murphy of Indiana (50 kg), Karlee Brooks of Arizona (53 kg) and May Prado of Georgia (65 kg). All three are still in high school this year. Others in the Senior division include two-time Junior Nationals champion Clare Booe of Florida (53 kg), plus Genesis Cejudo of Arizona (50 kg) and Hannah Errthum of Colorado (62 kg).
Errthum is a U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center (USOPTC) resident athlete. Brooks and Cejudo are part of the Elite Accelerator Program (EAP) at the USOPTC. Murphy and Booe compete for Wyoming Seminary.
There will also be seven talented athletes competing in the U17 division, which will be contested February 16-17. The U.S. team is led by 2017 U17 World bronze medalist Jaclyn Bouzakis of Pennsylvania (43 kg).
Other athletes in the U17 division, most who have placed high at major USA Wrestling age-group competitions, include Francesca Gusfa of New Jersey (40 kg), Kendall Moe of Indiana (46 kg), Martynique Davis of Arizona (57 kg), Emma Chacon of Arizona (57 kg), Morgan Lucio of Arizona (65 kg) and Alexandra Alli of Ohio (73 kg). Gusfa is a two-time age-group Pan American champion, with titles at the U15 and U17 levels.
Bouzakis competes for Wyoming Seminary. Lucio, Davis and Chacon compete for Valiant Prep in Arizona. Alli wrestles for Erie Prep Academy.
The team will be coached by National Women’s Developmental Coach Jessica Medina Bunker, and assigned team coach Angel Cejudo of Scottsdale, Ariz.
There is usually a stream of this event provided by the hosts in Sweden, which will be shared when available via USA Wrestling’s social platforms.
