Hidlay wins silver medal in men’s freestyle at Polyak & Varga Memorial Ranking Event in Hungary

2024 Senior National Team member Trent Hidlay won a silver medal at 86 kg at the Polyak Imre & Varga Janos Memorial, a UWW Senior Ranking Series event, on Friday night.
Hidlay, a two-time age-group World medalist, was defeated by 2016 Olympic champion and three-time World champion Hassan Yazdanicharati of Iran in the finals by technical fall, 12-2. Yazdani led 8-2 after the first period, with four takedowns to one by Hidlay. Yazdani closed out the victory with a takedown and two step outs in the second period. Yazdani dominated the action on the edge of the mat.
Hidlay opened with a 10-0 technical fall victory over Bobur Islomov of Uzbekistan, then stopped 2022 European U23 silver medalist Evsem Shvelidze of Georgia, in a 13-3 technical fall in the semifinals.
Hidlay was a 2022 U23 World silver medalist and a 2021 U20 World bronze medalist. He was a four-time All-American for NC State.
The United States finished the men’s freestyle tournament with three medals, after 2024 Olympian Mason Parris won a gold medal at 125 kg and Nahshon Garrett added a bronze medal at 61 kg, both on Thursday. The USA placed third in the final team standings.
The U.S. women’s team started its competition with one athlete on Friday, 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials runner-up Audrey Jimenez, who was defeated in her opening bout at 50 kg by Individual Neutral Athlete Nadezhda Sokolova, in a 10-0 technical fall. Jimenez did not qualify for repechage, finishing in 10th place.
The competition continues on Saturday with the completion of women’s freestyle, and the start of Greco-Roman. The USA will have two women on the mat, 2020 and 2024 Olympian Kayla Miracle at 62 kg and National Team member Amanda Martinez at 55 kg. The USA will have two Greco-Roman wrestlers competing as well. 2024 U.S. Olympian Adam Coon at 130 kg and two-time Senior World Team member Dalton Roberts at 60 kg.
Session times on Saturday are at 10:30 a.m. local time, with the finals at 5:00 p.m. local time. Budapest is located six hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Time.
