USA wins nine gold medals to dominate U23 Pan American Championships in men’s freestyle

RIONEGRO, Colombia – The United States claimed nine individual gold medals and easikt won the team championships in men’s freestyle at the U23 Pan American Championships on Saturday. This is the first year that UWW Americas hosted a U23 Continental Championships.

Individual champions for Team USA were:

  • Charlie Farmer (Coal Valley, Ill./West Point WC) at 57 kg
  • Kurtis Phipps (Irwin, Pa./Buffalo Valley RTC) at 61 kg
  • Wyatt Henson (Lock Haven, Pa./Sunkist Kids WC) at 65 kg
  • Daniel Cardenas (Westminster, Colo./Bear Cave WC) at 70 kg
  • Hunter Garvin (North Liberty, Iowa) at 74 kg
  • Clayton Whiting (Oconto, Wis./Gopher WC-RTC) at 79 kg
  • Levi Hopkins (Palmer, Ala./ Buies Creek WC) at 92 kg
  • Massoma Endene (Waverly, Iowa/Burg Training Center) at 97 kg
  • Lucas Stoddard (Chardon, Ohio/West Point WC) at 125 kg

All 10 U.S. men’s freestyle wrestlers reach the gold medal finals. Earning a silver medal was John Gunderson (Baraboo, Wis./Panther WC RTC) at 86 kg

Team USA had a combined 31-2 record for the tournament, with 25 of the victories being bonus point wins, either technical falls, pins or a forfeit.

Four U.S. wrestlers won all of their matches by technical fall or pin: Cardenas, Whiting, Hopkins and Endene.

Stoddard lost in his third match to Jorawar Singh Dhinsa of Canada, 12-5, and finished second in his pool, which placed him in the semifinals, where he beat Jonavan Smith of Puerto Rico by pin. In the gold-medal finals, he avenged his loss to Dhinsa with a 2-1 victory.

Stoddard was among three U.S. champions who won razor-close finals matches. Farmer won his 57 kg final by criteria, beating Treye Trotman of Canada, 7-7. Henson scored a 9-8 win over Victor Parra Roman of Venezuela in the 65 kg finals

Team USA finished with 245 points to capture the U23 Pan American men’s freestyle team title, a full 106 points ahead of runner-up Canada with 139 points. Taking third place was Puerto Rico with 138 points. There were 15 nations which scored points in the tournament.
