Talented field set for Boys National Recruiting Showcase, with 64 state champions plus World Team members
by Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling
There will be a talented field of wrestlers competing in the 2024 Boys National High School Recruiting Showcase, which will be held at Hyvee Hall at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines, Iowa, October 25-26. This is an elite competition in which all of the entries must have met specific performance requirements in order to qualify. The boys will be competing in folkstyle, which is the style they will wrestle in college.
USA Wrestling traditionally tracks all of the high school state champions who are entered in the National Recruiting Showcase events. As of October 21, there are 64 state champions who have registered to compete in this event, with many more expected.
Among those already registered is four-time state champion William Anderson of Alabama (144), plus three-time state champions Hank Benter of Missouri (120), Zachariah Morse of Montana (120), Ben DeForest of North Dakota (132) and Liam Fox of Wyoming (150). Add in 16 two-time state champions to the mix.
Because the event also includes past All-Americans in a number of the major USA Wrestling age-group events on the calendar, there are numerous past age-group U.S. World Team and Pan American Team members in the field.
Leading the way is 2024 U17 World freestyle champion Samuel Sanchez of California, who will compete at 106 pounds in the Showcase.
There are four past U17 Greco-Roman World Team members in the draw, Hayden Schwab of Iowa, Hudson Loges of Nebraska (138), Billy Greenwood of Colorado (150) and Aiden Cooley of Texas (190). Cooley is also a past U17 Pan American silver medalist in both styles.
U15 Pan American double champions Chase Karenbauer of Pennsylvania (106), Liam Collins of Minnesota (113) and Jensen Boyd of Indiana (126) are in the field. Karenbauer won U15 Pan American double titles in both 2023 and 2024.
There is one returning Showcase champion in the field, Tanner Hodgins of New Jersey. Hodgins won the title last year at 165 pounds, but will now be wrestling at 190 pounds this season.
Two returning Showcase runners-up will return, looking to win the title this year: Matthew Prine of Iowa and Brandon Dean of Colorado. Prine was second last year at 106, but has jumped to 120 this year. Dean was second last year at 150, and returns at the same weight class.
Because each of the entries have met qualifying standards, we can expect every round to feature high-level competition.
This popular event is being held alongside the Brian Keck Memorial Preseason Nationals, which will also be at the Iowa Events Center, October 25-27. There are two other divisions for high school boys who are not entered in the Showcase, the High School 11th-12th Grade division and the High School 9th-10th Grade division. All of these high school divisions feature top wrestlers.
Schedule for Brian Keck Preseason Nationals and Boys National High School Recruiting Showcase
All of the divisions at the 2024 Brian Keck Memorial Preseason Nationals are sold out.
The event will be broadcast live on FloWrestling
