Hays advances to women’s freestyle bronze medal match at U23 World Championships

by Richard Immel, USA Wrestling

TIRANA, Albania – Brooklyn Hays picked up her third win at the U23 World Championships during the Thursday morning repechage round to qualify for a bronze medal bout in the women’s freestyle division. She became the fourth U.S. woman to qualify for a medal match so far in Albania.

Hays won a decisive 7-0 decision against Luciana Beda in the repechage. She led 1-0 at the break from a shot clock point. In the second period, Hays flexed her muscle with three takedowns to ice it.

In her 68 kg bronze medal bout, Hays will face Individual Neutral Athlete Alina Shauchuk, who went 2-1 yesterday and fell in the semifinal by fall to Nesrin Bas of Turkey in a rematch of last year’s U23 World final. Shauchuk is the current U23 European champion and is a two-time age-group World medalist.

Accompanying Hays in tonight’s medal round for Team USA are Sage Mortimer and Yelena Makoyed, who will wrestle for gold, and Amani Jones, who is up for a bronze.

The women’s freestyle group one (50-55-59-68-76 kg) medal matches are scheduled for 6 p.m. local time this evening. For those following along live, Tirana, Albania, is located six hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Time.

Updated brackets and match-by-match results are available on UWW Arena. A live broadcast of the event is available for the U.S. market at FloWrestling.com.
