Jasmine Robinson (Allen, Texas/Army WCAP) has been named the USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week, presented by U.S. Air Force Special Warfare, on September 11, 2024.
Robinson won the 72 kg gold medal in women's freestyle last week in Pontevedra, Spain, at the 2024 U20 World Championships. In all four matches, Robinson won by fall, including a stunning pin at 4:14 against U20 Asian runner-up Yuqi Liu of China in the gold medal match.
On her way to the finals, Robinson wrecked the 72 kg bracket with three falls in three matches to qualify for the gold medal bout. She recorded pins over Senior Pan American silver medalist Edna Jimenez Villalba of Mexico, individual neutral athlete Kristina Bratchikova, and U17 World bronze medalist Noemi Osvath Nagy of Hungary, logging a combined match time of two minutes and 46 seconds.
In the gold medal match, Liu took an early 2-0 lead from a double leg takedown 10 seconds into the match. Robinson responded with a pair of four-point throws—an overhook toss and a neck wrench—before getting reversed by Liu. With Robinson leading at the break, 9-4, Liu opened the second period with her second takedown of the match to cut the lead to three before Robinson connected again with a neck wrench to secure the fall at the 4:14 mark.
Robinson, who was a U17 World bronze medalist last year, logged exactly seven minutes of mat time at the event with her finals match the only one to go into the second period.
The finals win by Robinson was instrumental for the U.S. finishing in third place as a team. The U.S. and China were neck-and-neck in the standings heading into the 72 kg final, the last match of the day, with the winner clinching third place for her country.
This is the second USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week honor for Jasmine Robinson. In April, Robinson competed and won national titles in both the U20 and U23 divisions at the 2024 U.S. Marine Corps Women’s National Championships in Spokane, Washington.
