by Savannah Asmann, USA Wrestling
Army wins the team title with 132.5 points at the 2025 Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Army held on to an early day one lead in the team race to secure the team title with one champion at the 2025 Southern Scuffle.
Army’s Gunner Filipowicz secured the only individual title for the Black Knights. Filipowicz earned the title with a second period technical fall over Duke’s Aidan Wallace, 18-3. After the first period, Filipowicz held a 10-1 lead through two takedowns and four near fall points. In the second period, he didn’t let up as a reversal and two more takedowns would be enough to end the match early.
After pushing seven into the semifinals on day one, the Black Knights had nine athletes place, with two finalists in Filipowicz at 165 pounds and Lucas Stoddard at 285 pounds. Stoddard was stopped in the finals by Penn State’s Cole Mirasola, 9-0, to place second on day two.
Penn State and Oklahoma tied for second in the team race, totaling 126.5 points. The Nittany Lions had three champions in Zack Ryder (184), Connor Mirasola (197) and Cole Mirasola (285).
There was one athlete able to repeat last year’s title run as Northern Colorado’s Stevo Poulin defeated North Carolina’s Spencer Moore, 5-0, in the finals. Poulin helped the Bears to an eighth place finish overall, with two finalists. Dom Serrano fell in a close match to Little Rock’s Nasir Bailey at 133 pounds. The pair were tied at 1-1 before Bailey’s overtime takedown to secure the match.
Little Rock had two champions at the Southern Scuffle, Bailey at 133 pounds and Jordan Williams at 149 pounds.
Host Chattanooga saw one champion in Sergio Desiante at 165 pounds. Desiante bested Oklahoma’s Gaven Sax, 3-2, for the teams only individual title, as the Mocs finished in 12th in the team race. Desiante was also named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.
Other individual champions included Dylan Cedeno of Virginia (141) and Blake Saito of Brown (157). Cedeno capped off his tournament with a 2-0 decision over North Carolina’s Jordan Williams, and Saito defeated North Dakota State’s Max Petersen, 6-0, in the finals.
North Carolina finished in fourth with two finalists. Rounding out the top five was North Dakota State with one finalist and five placers.
