AMMAN, Jordan – The United States picked up its first medal of the U17 World Championships in Greco-Roman on Tuesday, and it’s golden.

Jayden Raney is a 2024 U17 Greco-Roman World Champion.

In one of the most thrilling matches of the tournament, Raney faced off against Alpamys Bolatuly of Kazakhstan for the gold medal at 55 kg. Raney started strong, securing a takedown to take an early 2-0 lead. He then turned Bolatuly for two more points and managed to get him on his shoulders, extending his lead to 6-0 entering break.

In period two, however, Bolatuly fought back, earning a takedown and a turn to narrow the gap to 6-4. The tension mounted as Bolatuly earned another point on a step out, making it 6-5. A challenge from Kazakhstan, who wanted more than a step out point in the sequence, resulted in the score being adjusted to 7-5 in Raney’s favor following a lost challenge. Time expired, and Jayden Raney was victorious in Amman. The medal is the first for Raney, as this tournament was his international debut.

The Team USA standout went 5-0 at the tournament, picking up four impressive wins on day one, pushing him into the gold medal match. He logged wins in the opening session over U17 Asian champion Sardor Kholmurzaev of Uzbekistan, Denys Seredin of Ukraine and U17 European bronze medalist Ali Nazarov of Azerbaijan.

In the semifinals, Raney secured a pin over 2023 U17 European Championships bronze medalist Petro Zhytovoz of Hungary. Zhytovoz climbed to a 6-0 lead early, scoring on a throw out of bounds and a straight lift for four points from the par terre position. Raney pulled Zhytovoz into a front headlock and used his momentum to secure the fall with a mere two seconds remaining in the first period.

The Sturgis, Kentucky, native is a four-time USA Wrestling 16U Nationals champion, winning both Greco-Roman and freestyle titles in 2022 and 2023 in Fargo, N.D. His twin brother Jordyn Raney, the 2023 U17 Greco-Roman World Champion, will wrestle for bronze on Wednesday.

Four Americans in the first Greco-Roman group fell short of the podium in Amman. Iowan Hayden Schwab missed out on a repechage spot after Kazakhstan’s Yedige Toleutayev, who had defeated Schwab in the first round, was upset in the 48 kg semifinals.

In the morning session on Monday, three Americans faced tough starts and were eliminated after 0-1 records: Colton Weiler at 65 kg, Emmitt Sherlock at 80 kg, and Trayvn Boger at 110 kg.

Repechage matches are slated to begin at 10:30 a.m. local time, seven hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Time. The full schedule is listed below.
