Bommarito wins gold at Beach World Series Final in Croatia

POREC, Croatia – Eliana Bommarito claimed gold on the second day of the 2024 Beach World Series Final being held at Plava Laguna in Porec, Croatia this weekend.

Bommarito, a 2023 Beach World champion, won her first two matches in the +70 kg round robin bracket. She opened with a 2-1 decision over Romania’s Catalina Axente, followed by a decisive 3-0 blanking of Greece’s Stefania Zacheila. On Sunday, Bommarito defeated Ukraine’s Daria Konstantynova by fall just 48 seconds into the match.

In the semifinals, Bommarito grinded out a 2-2 decision over Greece’s Aikaterini Pitsiava to advance to the gold medal match, where she would face Romania’s Axente once again. Due to an injury default, the match was not wrestled, and Bommarito claimed the gold medal.

Olivia Pizano secured three narrow victories at 70 kg on Saturday. In the Knockout Round match against Croatia’s Milla Andelic, Pizano earned the 1-0 decision to enter round robin play. She brought down Dimitra Androutsou of Greece, 2-1, and Viktoriia Hrytsenko of Ukraine, 1-1, to remain undefeated heading into day two.

She dropped a close 1-0 match to Astrid Montero Chirinos of Venezuela in the semifinals, moving into the bronze medal match. Pizano fell to Olena Nikitinska of Ukraine, 1-0, placing fourth.

On Saturday, Mariah Anderson at 50 kg held a 1-1 record after day one. She topped fellow American Valerie Carreon, 3-0, in her opening match, before falling, 3-1, to Romania’s Ana Pirvu.

The U.S. men’s group had four athletes win a match, three at 70 kg. Justin Benjamin, the No. 3 ranked athlete in the weight class, went 1-1 in his first two bouts. Both Ruben Calderon and Bryan Coll won in the Knockout Round and followed with 0-2 records in the round robin bracket. In the 90+ kg bracket, Gabriel Rangel defeated Alessio Vandi of Italy by fall in his third match.
