Twelve repeat as Masters Men’s Freestyle Champions at 2025 CLAW U.S. Open in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nev.— The 2025 CLAW U.S. Open began on Wednesday at The Expo at World Market Center. Master’s men’s freestyle competition was held from start to finish, as 37 champions were crowned on Wednesday evening.

Of the 12 repeat champions from last year’s event, there were two champions in Division C. Rudy James, a consistent top competitor at this level, earned a title at 78 kg after a 10-0 technical fall in the finals. James doubled up on titles in both men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman in 2024, and is set to compete in Greco-Roman later this week. At 100 kg, James Medeiros secured a second-consecutive title in men’s freestyle in division C.

A trio of repeat champions competed in Division D on Wednesday. Carson Gainey (58 kg), Derek Brignell (78 kg) and Aaron Hayes (130 kg) defended their titles from 2024. Brignell is one of few Canadian competitors to compete in Las Vegas.

The Masters E Division had the most returning champions at six. Four athletes were able to defend their titles in Don Jones (70 kg), James Miller (88 kg), Charles Jones (100 kg) and Eric Mittlestead (130 kg). Mittlestead is a multiple-time Veterans World Championships gold medalist, most recently winning both styles in Porec, Croatia, in October of 2024.

Three athletes in Division F defended their titles, Raphael McDonald (62 kg), Kevin Hejnal (78 kg) and Ron Cole (100 kg). In the final match, Hejnal defeated Bruce Moe, who was the returning champion at 70 kg in 2024, making the move to 78 kg for this year’s event.

In Division B, Brandon Precin, a three-time NCAA All-American for Northwestern and current North Central College Assistant Coach, defeated defending champion and 2019 Senior World Team member Tyler Graff, 4-2.  

2024 Veterans World Champion Ben VomBaur continued a streak of success, picking up a title at 62 kg in Masters C Division. VomBaur secured the victory after locking up a cradle for the fall at 1:17.

The CLAW U.S. Open continues on Thursday, with the Masters Greco-Roman, Senior Greco-Roman World Team Trials, Senior Women’s freestyle, and U20 Greco-Roman tournaments.
