Bassett, Movahead win U15 Nationals double titles, Hutcherson repeats as freestyle champion
by Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – With victories in the freestyle finals on Friday night, Keegan Bassett of Young Guns WC (41 kg) and Reece Movahead of the American Dream WC (52 kg) claimed double titles at the 2024 U15 National Championships by winning both the Greco-Roman and freestyle divisions at their weight class. This event was part of the Pritchard Companies U.S. Open held at the South Point Arena.
Bassett scored a 10-0 technical fall in the finals over Ariah Mills of the Roundtree Wrestling Academy, and was later named Outstanding Wrestler in the event.
Movahead jumped to a 4-0 lead and held off a late challenge from Conner Whitely of the Bad Karma WC, winning the close battle, 5-3.
This year, the U15 Nationals was the qualifying event for the U15 Pan American Championships, which are set for San Salvador, El Salvador, June 13-16. Athletes score points in both the Greco-Roman and freestyle division, which will be used to determine a wrestler in each weight to compete in both styles at the U15 Pan American Championships.
By winning both styles, Bassett and Movahead have clinched their position on the U15 Pan American team. The final point standings will be calculated and announced early next week, to determine the full U.S. U15 Pan American team.
Claiming a U15 Nationals title for the second straight year was Mario Hutcherson of the Young Guns WC, who scored a 13-2 technical fall over Parker Casey of the Sebolt Wrestling Academy in the 75 kg finals. Hutcherson was the 68 kg champion last year. Earlier in the week, Hutcherson was second in the Greco-Roman division.
Jason Dube of Pennsylvania scored all his points in the second period to defeat 2024 U15 Nationals Greco-Roman champion Justus Heeg of the Pinnacle WC in the 62 kg finals.
Two of this year’s freestyle champions were second in the U15 Greco-Roman Nationals on Wednesday, Evan Restivo of M2 Training Center (38 kg) and Camryn Howard of New York (68 kg).
Restivo defeated Rylan Wax of Beast Mode Wrestling, 4-1 in the finals. Howard secured a 5-2 decision over Asher Bacon of X-Calibur Athletics Wrestling Club in his championship match.
Chase Karenbauer of Bad Karma WC, who was a 2023 U15 Nationals Greco-Roman champion, came back this year and became the U15 Nationals freestyle champion at 44 kg. He scored an impressive 13-0 technical fall over
Traevon Ducking of the Contenders Wrestling Academy in the finals.
Other individual champions were Matthew Mulligan of New Jersey (48 kg), Gage Lohr of Berge Elite Wrestling Academy (57 kg) and Kendahl Hoare of M2 Training Center (85 kg).
Mulligan led 6-3 at the break and opened it up in the second period, defeating Kagan Painter of the Bad Karma WC, 12-3 in the finals. Lohr led Weston Borgers of Beast Mode Wrestling 8-7 late in the second period, but a takedown and turn led to a late outburst and a 14-9 win. Hoare scored early then closed out his 11-0 technical fall over Ibrahim Zaky of the Integrity WC with repeated gut wrench turns.
