NICE, France – Texas native Kaylynn Albrecht earned a gold medal at 72 kg in women’s freestyle for Team USA on Friday at the 51st annual Henri Deglane Grand Prix of France being held at Halle des sports Charles Ehrmann in Nice, France.
Albrecht, who picked up gold for the second-straight year at this tough international competition, scored two impressive wins in a three-woman round-robin bracket. She opened the day with a 9-7 decision over 2021 U20 World silver medalist Lilly Schneider of Germany and followed with a decisive pin against 2023 U23 World bronze medalist Tinra Sjoeberg of Sweden.
Albrecht was a NAIA champion for Baker University in 2023 and a qualifier for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. It’s the fourth international medal for Albrecht. In addition to her back-to-back gold medals from the Henri Deglane, she claimed gold at the 2023 Grand Prix of Spain and bronze at the 2023 Bill Farrell Memorial International.
Past U17 World medalists Tiare Ikei and Skylar Hattendorf both finished with 1-2 records to fall just outside of medal placement for Team USA. Ikei wound up in fifth place at 53 kg, while Hattendorf placed seventh at 62 kg.
The action from France continues at 10:30 a.m. local time/4:30 a.m. (ET) on Saturday with the men’s freestyle tournament. All 10 men’s freestyle weight classes will compete start to finish.
